The afternoon sun hangs high over the sea, bright enough to bleach parts of the horizon into a pale haze. Beyond us, the water reaches toward distant patches of land that appear as dark shapes against the sky. The dock feels enormous from a child's perspective, a wide platform suspended between land and sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My second-oldest sister sits closest to the edge. One small shift forward and her feet could be dangling over the water. Her striped shirt catches the afternoon sunlight, and her eyes narrow against the brightness. The light falls directly across her face, making her squint toward the lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beside her sits my third sister in a red top, close enough that their shoulders nearly touch. Her dark hair frames her face as she turns toward the camera. Between them, there is only a small space, the kind that naturally exists between siblings who have spent years sharing rooms, toys, and family stories. The sunlight reaches her face too, softening the edges of the photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am the smallest figure in the photograph, balanced on my oldest sister's lap. My hair is tied into two pigtails, and my feet barely reach the concrete dock. She wears a light pink top and lifts one hand in a wave toward the camera. Her smile is directed at the person behind the lens, but her body remains angled toward me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All three of my sisters are looking directly at the camera. My oldest sister waves as if greeting someone familiar. Looking at the photograph now, I find myself wondering who stood behind the lens. A stranger seems unlikely. The smiles are too relaxed, too comfortable. Perhaps it was a parent, an aunt, an uncle, or another relative spending the afternoon with us by the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, when I look at the photograph, I see something entirely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I see my second-oldest sister occupying the place nearest the water. I see my third sister seated beside her, another layer of closeness. I see my oldest sister holding me in her lap. Without appearing to plan it, they have arranged themselves around me, creating a circle of protection so natural that none of us appear aware of it.<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sea dominates the photograph. It is beautiful, but it is also enormous. It stretches beyond the frame, beyond the horizon, beyond anything my younger self could fully understand. The water seems endless compared to the small figures sitting on the dock. Yet despite all that open space, I appear completely at ease. My attention belongs to the moment. Looking at the photograph now, I think about how natural trust feels when you are young.
