The memory itself is hazy, yet a few details have stayed with me over the years. I remember how excited she was to take me there. It was a special occasion for her, so much so that she even bought me the shirt I am wearing in the photograph. She wanted us to look formal for the place we were about to visit. In her mind, an art gallery was a space that deserved a particular kind of respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, however, it was an entirely different experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the adults paused before the paintings, discussing them with quiet seriousness, I was busy looking for ways to entertain myself. I insisted on bringing my water bottle and my favorite little red toy car because, to me, they were far more interesting than anything hanging on the gallery walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the artworks I saw that day were abstract, blurred forms, scattered colors, and lines that seemed to obey no rules at all. I couldn't understand why people lingered in front of them, studying and admiring them for so long. To a child, art was meant to represent something recognizable: a person, a house, a tree. Everything else seemed like little more than a tangle of meaningless lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember a thought that crossed my mind at the time, one that now makes me smile. I looked at the paintings on the walls and wondered: how is it that these artists are praised for making drawings like these, while I get scolded every time I draw on the walls of my room with crayons?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that moment, the difference between art and \"mess\" meant nothing to me. They both seemed like marks left behind by someone who had decided to draw where they weren't supposed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, I understand that what I lacked was not the ability to see, but context. Abstract art does not always seek to represent something tangible. More often, it attempts to convey a feeling, an idea, or an experience that cannot easily be expressed through traditional forms. Its value does not necessarily lie in what it depicts, but in the way it invites us to think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, I think my reaction as a child was honest and, in its own way, important. It brought to the surface a question that many people continue to ask even as adults: what makes something art?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is it the technique? The idea? The artist's name? Or is it simply the fact that a work is placed within the walls of a gallery and accepted by a community that recognizes it as art?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps art does not begin the moment a painting is hung on a wall. Perhaps it begins the moment it compels us to pause and reflect, even if only to disagree with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I look at this photo today, I do not remember the paintings. I remember my mother, excited to share with me something she believed was valuable. And perhaps that is why this memory has stayed with me for so long. Not because I understood art that day, but because, for the first time, I was confronted with the idea that not everything I fail to understand immediately is without value.
